Brandon Welcome is a 13-year-old eighth-grader at Stephen Middle School in the USA. He looks forward to Fight-Free(无打架) Fridys. According to a new program, if there are no fights at the school for two weeks, students can get a day without school uniforms. “The new program has been changing things for the better,” Welcome said.

The program, called Positive Behavioral Interventions and Suppors, or PBIS, rewards students with school dollars. Students can then exchange the dollars for things at the school shop. But they must first show good behavior such as respecting others and taking responsibility.

Headmaster Cyrus said they have seen results since PBIS was introduced three years ago. Students can use the money, called “Eagle Bucks”, to buy candy and other things from the school shop. Or they can buy a day on which they don't have to wear a uniform. A few years ago, students could pay for things with cash. Now, they work hard to earn Eagle Bucks because the shop accepts only the school dollars, Cyrus said.

“With PBIS, there are more good behaviors in school. We see improvements in the school environment, better student behaviours, more time spent in class and, hopefully, higher test scores,” Cyrus said.

Jalen McCreary is an eighth-grade student, too. He often helps a student who is in a wheelchair move through the hallways since he learned about the program.

  Jalen McCreary

“It makes people happier and wants to follow directions. It has really changed me,” said McCreary, a twelve-year-old student. “I always try to respect other people, keep myself out of trouble and get my grades up.”
