D

Far out in the lakewas a large wooden platform on which stood an improbably highdiving board — a kind of wooden Eiffel Tower. It was, I’m sure, thecounty’s tallest wooden structure and no one had ever been known tojump from it.

So it was quite ashock when our teacher, Mr. Milton, announced that he would diveoff the high board that very afternoon.

Word of hisquestionable plan was already spreading through town as Mr. Miltonswam out to the platform. He was just a tiny, stick figurewhen he got there but even from such a distance the high boardseemed almost to touch the clouds. Once at the top, he paced theenormously long board, then took some deep breaths and finallystood at edge. He was going to do it.

Several hundredpeople had gathered at the shore to watch. Mr. Milton stood forquite a long time, then he raised his arms, took one massive bounceand launched himself into a perfect dive. It was beautiful. He fellwith perfect style for what seemed minutes. The crowd fell silent. The only sound to be heard was the faint whistle of his bodytearing through the air toward the water far, far below.

But about threequarters of the way down he seemed to have second thoughts andbegan suddenly to panic, waving his arms and legs like someonehaving a bad dream. When he was perhaps thirty feet above thewater, he gave up on waving and spread his arms and legs wide, apparently hoping that it would somehow slow his fall.

It didn’t.

He hit the water atover six hundred miles an hour. The impact was so loud that it madebirds fly out of their trees three miles away. I don’t think heentered the water at all. He just bounced off it, about fifteenfeet back into the air. After that, he lay still on the surface, spinning like an autumn leaf.

He was brought toshore by two passing fishermen in a rowboat and placed on an oldblanket where he spent the rest of the afternoon. Occasionally heaccepted small sips of water, but otherwise was too shocked tospeak. From head to toe, he was covered with deep redbruises.

... It was the bestday of my life.

Since the day of itsbirth, the United Nations has been the subject of much debate.16

Others think that itis too weak. We can better understand this debate if we learn moreabout the U.N. and its history.

The U.N. was startedfor two reasons. First, when the idea was born, people all over theworld were tired of war. They felt that there must be peacefulanswers to the world’s problems.

During the next yearand a half, the idea of such an organisation was debated around theworld. Then came the big day. On April 11, 1945, the firstinternational meeting of the United Nations took place in SanFrancisco. The goal of the meeting was to write the U.N.
