¡¡¡¡It is much more convenient to communicate with others by telephone when you have something urgent. For instance, when you are short of money at the university and are anxious to ask your parents for help. You can get through easily and talk with them immediately if you dial the right number. But a letter will take several days before it reaches the destination and returns to you. For messages of urgency, telephone appears favorable. Besides, you save the trouble to spend time writing. What’s more, you can hear the voice. Telephone can keep people in touch with each other easily. On the other hand, telephone sometimes seems less formal, and to some extent it makes people lazy. Most people would rather choose to pick up the telephone for communication.

¡¡¡¡However, letters may do a better job when you have a lot to express to someone. Generally, people like to read letters from friends or relatives. For example, my parents are always looking forward to letters from me. To them, letters can express more than the message, such as emotions, respect, etc. Secondly, letters seem formal. Thirdly, letter writing serves as an effective way to improve our writing skill though it takes time to organize one’s thoughts and express them clearly and logically. In addition, we can keep letters and read them again and again.

¡¡¡¡So, I prefer to use telephone when I have something urgent or less formal;I choose to write letters to keep contact with my friends for messages of no urgency.ª¤

¡¡¡¡It is true that competition benefits us in many ways. First it makes people creative and urges people to pursue for the excellence. Second, competition makes the world develop rapidly. It keeps on bringing us better things like advanced communicative means. Owing to competition in the last twenty years, great many favorable changes have taken place everywhere in China. People’s living standards have improved a lot. Many people are fond of competition because it enables them to bring their knowledge or skills into full play. If you want to lead a prospero us life, you have to perform much better than others.

Computers have much better memories and can store huge amounts of information, and they can do calculations in a fraction of the time taken by a human mathematician. In fact, computers can do many of the things we do, but faster and better. They can pay wages, reserve seats on a plane, control machines in factories, work out tomorrow’s¡¡weather, and even play chess, write poetry, or compose music. Nowadays, it is very convenient and economical to do anything on the Internet, such as sending or receiving eª²mail, shopping, advertising, making friends, and entertaining. The globe will be like an office or home. This is the unprecedented charm of the computer. In short, computers have been making the whole world much more advanced and civilized than ever before.

¡¡¡¡However, computers have been creating many problems. First, viruses arise frequently, bringing great troubles to many people. Every year, various viruses cause loss of thousands of millions of dollars and ruin numberless projects. On the 26th of a month 1999, many personal computers were destroyed by the CIH virus. Secondly, some computer “experts” make huge amount of money by cheating a computer¡¡system, and they are very difficult to catch. What is worse, some people transmit pornographic information or pictures on the Internet, which is harmful to young people.

¡¡¡¡Despite their disadvantages, computers have brought us far more benefits than troubles.
