A kid moved away from his friends and the familiarity of New Jersey to California, then immediately solved a local problem with a brilliant invention.
Along with potentially winning himself a career in advertisement television with an excellent reveal video and excitable voice, Mathur, an 11th grade San Francisco student, has invented a fire-activated extinguisher (灭火器) to protect the property of those he loves now that he lives in a state that has a wildfire “season”.
A single device is capable of protecting fire-risk areas in one’s house, while multiple can form a defensive area around one’s entire property against fires. “Over the past three years, there have been almost 7,500,000 acres of wildfire in California alone, destroying nearly 50,000 structures,” describes Arul Mathur, inventor of the Fire-Activated-Canister-Extinguisher, or F.A.C.E.
When a sensor on the device heats up to a certain temperature, a chemical burst within, releasing an eco-friendly fire-retardant (阻燃剂) spray 5-6 feet in all directions. The retardant can be re-filled quite easily, and the only other human-controlled aspect is the initial introduction of air-pressure into the canister which can be done manually (用手的).
Mathur planned to introduce the device via Kickstarter, which saw his goal of $10,000 reached in less than a day, and came with an offer of $99 for F.A.C.E, that will be sold for $120 when production begins.
The only existing market alternative for F.A.C.E is a manual extinguisher, or an automatic sprinkler system, which unless it can be fixed during construction of the house, will normally cost between $1 to $3 dollars per square foot, amounting to many thousands for a family home. Mathur wrote in his Kickstarter that every penny of profit will go to providing F.A.C.E. donations to fire risk areas.
Indeed 5-6 feet of spray isn’t enough to stop large fires, but if enough devices are placed in strategic areas, neighborhoods or rural communities can work together to prevent brush fires from becoming wildfires, or living room fires from becoming house fires.
4.What can we know about Mathur?
A. He lives with his friends. B. He is engaged in advertising
C. He lives in San Francisco now. D. He refuses to help local people
5.What’s the feature of the device?
A. It’s costly. B. It’s affordable
C. It’s hard to produce D. It’s difficult to operate
6.Which of the following can best describe Mathur?
A. Intelligent and generous. B. Shy and kind
C. Brave and strong D. Patient and careful.
7.What does the author want to stress in the last paragraph?
A. The safety of the device B. The significance of the device
C. The limitations of the device D. The development of the device

Our Planet Earth is full of life and has incredible biodiversity. Biological Diversity or Biodiversity is the base of human existence and fundamental to its well-being. Species are the building blocks of this life on Earth, and it is believed that the species that are at present globally found have continuously evolved over 65 million years since the Last Mass Extinction. However, the nature and extent of our planet’s biodiversity at all levels have not been completely evaluated yet. Thus, the exact number of species found in the world remains unknown. Over the years, with the advancement of scientific knowledge and the discovery of more new species, it has been approximated that there are, at present, 10 million to 14 million species on Earth, of which 1.2 million species have been data-based. This means that still more than 86%of the terrestrial (陆生的) and 91%of the marinespecies remain unknown.
Every year, taxonomists (分类学家) describe thousands of species, some of which are completely new to science, while in some cases, the species and subspecies are closely examined and determined whether they can be considered distinct species.
A study has revealed that over 99. 9% of all species amounting to more than 5 billion species that ever lived here, are believed to be extinct. At present, our planet houses millions of species, among which 86% live on land, 13% in the deep subsurface, and a mere 1% in the oceans. However, Biodiversity is not evenly distributed on Earth, and its number varies greatly on different continents.
The undiscovered and misidentified species slow our ability to understand patterns and changes in global biodiversity and the rate of species extinctions(灭绝). Even after several years of taxonomic studies, only 14% of terrestrial species and 9% of marine species have been officially added to the central database. Necessarily, some species will become extinct before researchers realize they ever existed.
8.What does the underlined word “marine”mean in Paragraph 1?
A. Rare B. Oceanic C. Endangered D. Novel.
9.What do taxonomists usually do?
A. Examine distribution of species. B. Compare species from subspecies.
C. Decide the situation of the species. D. Describe diversity of new-found species.
10.Which of the following can describe the distribution of the Earth’s Biodiversity?
A. Unequal. B. Accumulative C. Average D. Maximum.
11.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The central database covers all species.
B. The rate of species extinctions is rather high.
C. Many undiscovered species have been extinct.
D. Humans know little about endangered species.

This month, the Internet was flooded with wonderful digital art portraits, thanks to the work of the latest artificial intelligence-assisted application to go viral: Lensa. Users uploaded their photographs to the App and then—for a small fee—it used AI to transform their profile pictures into, say, a magical warrior princess version of themselves, in no time at all.
This year has seen a breakthrough for AI-driven image generators, which are now better than ever in quality, speed and affordability. If that sounds great to you, you might not be one of the millions of humans whose livelihoods depend on being able to exchange those skills for money.
Some artists predicted that a computer would recreate the aura of a masterpiece by Leonardo da Vinci in the near future. As long as there are enough data for the AI to train itself, it can copy numerous masterpieces just in several minutes. It seems unavoidable that a large number of artists would lose their jobs.
“I see it less as a threat and more of an opportunity,” the UK-based illustrator Michelle Thompson said, adding, “Like everything else, there will always be artists who can use the tools better.”
These tools are only as good as the data sets they are trained on. Human imagination, on the other hand, has no limit. For Dryhurst, an artist from Germany, AI models “could attempt to make a pale version of something we did years ago”, but that “doesn’t account for what we might do next”.
The kind of artificial intelligence we might imagine replacing artists—an entirely autonomous creative robot—does not yet exist, but it is coming. And as AI becomes more universal, artists, illustrators and designers will ultimately be set apart not by if, but by how, they use the technology.
12.Why does the author mention Lensa in Paragraph 1?
A. To recommend the new App. B. To inform latest news.
C. To lead in the AI topic D. To introduce its new function.
13.What is Michelle Thompson’s attitude towards AI?
A. Concerned B. Favorable C. Unclear. D. Critical.
14.What might be a weakness of AI in creating art works?
A. Accuracy. B. Diversity. C. Creativity. D. Efficiency.
15.Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Is AI coming into our daily life?
B. Can AI copy masterpieces of great artists?
C. Shall we welcome new AI technology?
D. Will AI replace artists in the future?

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Bruce had a sweet tooth during his childhood, but it was not just sugary snacks that he desired. Being raised in a poor family was a bittersweet experience, but it gave him adaptability and ambition.
When Bruce was young, his mother would tell him that the candies in the store’s checkout line belonged to the cashier. She said that because she could not afford a 50-cent chocolate bar. Nevertheless, he saw through her trick and made a promise that he would grow up to be wealthy enough to buy what his family needed.
Bruce’s father worked hard to make money outside, so he spent less time at home. Instead of focusing on their economic instability, Bruce’s mother selflessly pushed her children to strive for success so that they could lead a more comfortable life later. She worked for long hours every night and struggled to pay the minimum due on her bills. Still, she would find time to read with Bruce and his sister, Alice. Their mother taught them the value of perseverance, education, and moral fibre. Despite lack of their father’s company, they were loved and nurtured just as much.
However, not all of life’s milestones were easy. Some, like moving and being helpless, left Bruce with an endless bitter taste. He had to deal with many problems when they moved into Maryland, several states away from their roots in Georgia, to make a living. The first few months were great: baseball games, family trips to the mall, dinners, movies, etc. It felt like they were the perfect family. Then things changed. Baseball games were too expensive, and trips to the mall were replaced with days Bruce and Alice spent isolated in the study.
As the brother and sister grew up, money was even tighter. They spent many years living in a very poor family setting. Even so, their mother inspired them to keep trying and working academically. They even cooperated with each other and developed a computer system. Alice was joking about patenting it someday. But as the saying goes, “Good things never come easy”, and success requires setbacks.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One day, Bruce’s mother opened their study door and told them to pack.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
They eventually settled in Texas, and Bruce and Alice continued their academic efforts.
