Child Friendly To
A program Child Friendly To is working to transform Toronto into a place where all children can learn, play and grow in the healthiest way. We are building a culture that applies a child-friendly view to city planning and decision-making by increasing the role and voice of children in city management and increasing the rights of children across Toronto. We believe that:
Children are important residents with unique ideas and experiences that have the power to change how we make plans and decisions.
Children are experts in child-friendliness. Listening to children's ideas creates opportunity and improves equality. Building a city that is friendly to children requires an understanding of what living in the city is like for a child.
Engaging with children is our responsibility and duty. Local government has a responsibility to listen to children, as with all residents, when making plans and decisions.
November 20th is National Child Day in Canada. The day celebrates the importance of children as active participants in their own lives and communities, who can and should have opportunities for meaningful contributions to decision-making.
To celebrate National Child Day 2022, an event was held at City Hall with local students and city leaders. Children in grades four and five in Toronto were invited to share their ideas about creating a child-friendly city. We asked them:
What would a child-friendly Toronto look, feel and sound like?
If you had one wish to make Toronto more child-friendly, what would it be?Children from nine schools across Toronto submitted hundreds of responses, from written texts, to drawings, photographs and maps. They described the people, places and things that need to be involved and considered to create a child-friendly city.

With its durability and its unique color and patterns, tortoiseshell(龟甲) has been used to make everything from jewelry to combs and dishware. Tortoiseshell does not come from tortoises. It comes from hawksbill(玳瑁) turtles, which are not particularly large compared to other sea turtles and grow up to about 45 inches in shell and 150 pounds in weight. Between1884 and 1992, data shows that at least nine million hawksbills were killed and sold for their shells. But now, their international commercial trade is banned.
Brad Nahill, co-founder and president of turtle conservation group SEE Turtles and a National Geographic Explorer is leading an effort to use modern technology to fight the illegal trade of this age-old material. Tortoiseshell is widely and accurately copied with an artificial material, making it difficult to tell real from fake. SEE Turtles with its partners built an app to help. Named SEE Shell, the app uses Machine Learning to identify with 94 percent accuracy whether a photo of something with a tortoiseshell pattern is real or artificial. It's the first mobile app to use computer vision to fight the illegal wildlife trade, and it will help information-minded shoppers and law enforcement.
The app is also valuable for the wealth of information it can provide. All images are uploaded to a private, centralized database, with GPS coordinates(坐标) for each, allowingSEE Turtles to identify hot spots for illegal sales. Through the app, scientists have already come across tortoiseshell products they didn't know. The app will help local conservation groups identify illegal products.
SEE Turtles hopes to bring the technology to online platforms, which have seen a sharp rise in the illegal wildlife trade in recent years. This visual learning technology potentially can be adapted for other wildlife materials. For example, the ability to identify real elephant ivory in an instant would be particularly valuable. Nahill says, “There's a whole world of possibilities for applying Machine Learning to conservation issues.”
28.What can we infer about hawksbills according to paragraph 1?
A. They're valuable B. They're adorable
C. They're expensive D. They're endangered
28
29.What do people fail to do by using SEE Shell?
A. Stop illegal tortoiseshell deals. B. Identify illegal tortoiseshell products.
C. Locate spots for common illegal tortoiseshell sales.
D. Know exactly real tortoiseshells from artificial ones.
29
30.What does SEE Turtles expect the visual learning technology to do?
A. Be introduced to markets. B. Be sold on online platforms.
C. Be applied to more aspects of protection.
D. Be updated a variety of images of wildlife
30
31.What is the best title for the text?
A. A Fight Prevents the Illegal Wildlife Trade
B. A Team Protects Nature from Being Destroyed
C. A Move Controls International Commercial Trade
D. A New App Helps Save Endangered Sea Turtles

In a world where“no news is good news”and good news is not news, the media doesn’t tell stories of good behavior very often, but gives a long description of conflicts instead. However, a new study suggests that good news can actually encourage good actions.
The study examines the warm, encouraging feeling we get from watching someone act with courage or kindness—a feeling known as“moral elevation(道德提升)”. In the study, researchers explored whether people are encouraged to do good by simply watching the news on acts of kindness. They also tried to determine whether common acts of kindness would be enough to get feelings of moral elevation, or whether the actions had to be special or amazing.
People read articles and watched videos describing acts of common or uncommon kindness. Some read about an organisation that creates neighborhood gardens, while others saw a music video showing how the singer helped poor communities around the world. People then had the chance to give money to others or keep it for themselves.
The results show that hearing about these good actions made people more likely to give away their money—but these actions must be amazing or special good actions, not just everyday acts of kindness. What's more, people who saw themselves as highly moral people were likely to give money more often than those who did not.
This study has important influences on the news media, which likes to report negative events more often than positive ones. The results show that even a small change by the media could have deep influences.“We have every reason to believe that even a weak stimulus, like a story of moral goodness, can bring out moral elevation,”write the authors. So, if the news were to report on good actions more often, perhaps we would see a deep influence among readers.
32.What does the media think of the news on good actions?
A. It is too rare B. It is of no value
C. It is difficult to get. D. It is more popular.
32
33.What did the study try to find out?
A. Who is likely to enjoy good news. B. Why people like good news more
C. What kind of news people like best.
D. How people can be influenced by good news.
33
34.When will people do good actions according to the study?
A. When they've known about special good actions.
B. When they hope to encourage others by kind acts.
C. When they've been helped by others in daily life
D. When they hear about people who do good actions.
34
35.What does the author want to show in the last paragraph?
A. Traditional media still has a place nowadays.
B. Making right news choices is important to the media
C. People should be encouraged to do good actions.
D. Readers should choose to read good news more

“Mom!I'm home!”John closed the door and dropped his books on a nearby chair. “Hi,John, home already?”His mom turned around.
“It's spring. I was thinking more of our annual spring cleaning,”John's mo m suggested.“Tomorrow is Saturday. Let's do some cleaning, okay?”“Okay,”John agreed unwillingly.
The next day, they cleaned upstairs, downstairs, inside, outside, until everything was spotless. Tired, they sank into the couch. Pointing to Grandpa’s chair, John’s mom exclaimed,“Oh my! That old chair has got to go. We'll buy Grandpa a new one.”John's grandpa lived with them since Grandma had died. “John, Let's take the chair to the curb(马路边). Tomorrow the garbage truck is picking up on our block.”
As they attempted to move the chair, Grandpa walked by dragging one’s feet through the door and quickly blocked their way. “Oh, no!”he protested. “You can't take my chair.”
“It's old and worn. We'll buy you a new one,”John's mom argued.
“No,”John's grandpa persisted, trying to push his chair back into place. “I don't want a new one,”his voice trembled.
John's mo m had to give up and said she would discuss it with John's dad, who was still at work. John's mom left the living room to prepare the dinner. With a sigh of relief, the old man sank into his chair and closed his eyes.
“Grandpa, why won't you let us get rid of the chair? It's so old.”John asked his grandpa when his mom left the room.
“You don't understand, John.”Grandpa shook his head from side to side. After a long pause he said,“I sat in this chair, with your grandma right here, when I asked her to marry me. When I sit in this chair and close my eyes I feel she is near.” Grandpa softly stroked(轻抚) the arm of the chair.“And the night your father was born, I sat in this chair.I was nervous and scared when they placed the tiny baby into my arms, yet I was never happier.”A smile flashed across his old face.
“I think I'm beginning to understand,”John said thoughtfully. “The chair gave you comfort and warmth. This is not just a chair. It is more like a friend.”However, that night when John and his grandpa were asleep, John's mom and dad carried the chair to the curb.
