The Cold, Hard Reality

内容提要：Cold weather has a great effect on how our minds and our bodies work. Maybe that is why there are so many expressions that use the word cold.For centuries, the body's blood has been linked closely with the emotions. People who show no human emotions or feelings, for example, are said to be cold-blooded. Cold-blooded people act in cruel ways. They may do brutal things to others, and not by accident.

　　Cold snapbrings snow---Beijing's first snowfall this winter, which began on Saturday night and lasted until Sunday afternoon, surprised locals.

　　寒潮带来降雪--北京今冬的初雪让当地居民颇感意外。这场雪从上周六晚间一直持续到周日下午。

　　标题中的cold snap就是指"寒潮".Cold snap是指strong cold air（强冷空气）由亚洲大陆西部或西北部侵袭中国时的强降温天气过程，一般多发生在秋末、冬季、初春时节。Cold snap地面高压的前端一般都有一条cold front（冷锋，冷空气前锋）。据了解，为缓解干旱，此次长时间降雪其实是有关部门进行weather modification（人工影响天气）作业的结果。

　　秋季的清晨，地面上常会凝结cold dew（寒露）。春初料峭的cold spell（春寒期）和夏末出其不意的Indian summer（秋老虎）常令人措手不及。为应对此次cold snap,北京heat supply（供暖）近日全面启动，而每年的heating season（供暖季）一般从11月15日开始。
